1. AirDrop-I've talked about AirDrop before, but it is seriously one of my favorite tools! Sharing photos, videos, websites, etc. is made so easy with AirDrop. If you are unfamiliar with AirDrop, check out how to use it here. Big thank you to Amy Banas, the TIS at Ike & Ross, for sharing this brand new tip. You can now add the AirDrop icon to your dock for quick access! This tip had me jumping for joy this week! Learn how here! 2. New Gmail-Gmail is testing out a new look and feel! Google typically allows folks to opt-in and provide feedback for a couple of months before making the changes permanently for everyone. Big thank you to Alison Mahoney, the TIS at Ross & Sullivan, for these helpful guides! Read about the new features. Stay composed: here's a quick rundown of the new Gmail. 3. Schoology and YouTube-We have heard reports of having trouble embedding YouTube videos into Schoology. While this gets sorted out, I would recommend sending your YouTube videos to EdPuzzle or to SafeYouTube.net and get a 'usable' link that way.

1. iOS11 Update-You have the green light to update your iPads to iOS11. Students will get notified via Schoology on Friday to update at home over the weekend As with any update, make sure to back up all files & photos that you want to save before updating. Please also leave enough time for the update to complete while on a WiFi network and plugged into a charger. Here is a presentation of the 11 Best Features for the Classroom. There are many more fantastic features, but this will be a great place to start! If you or your students experience any type of issue, please put in a tech ticket to notify the tech team. Most apps will need to be updated after making the change to iOS11. 2. Before Seeing Ms. Sutter-As much as I love seeing our students, please make sure that they have tried to troubleshoot their tech issue before coming down to my office. I attached a sign of steps to complete before coming down to my office. Feel free to hang it in your classroom (if you'd like). I will also share it with the students on Schoology. 3. Gmail Session-During our Institute Day, I had you mark topics that you were interested in focusing on. One of the big topics that came up was how to officially make the switch from Apple Mail to Gmail, how to organize Gmail, and any tricks that Gmail has to offer. I will be doing this session with our new staff on Friday, October 27th during 9th period. If you are free during that period and would like to join us, we will be in Sam Lynn's room. I would also like to offer an after school (Thursday, October 26th) or before school (Friday, October 27th) for any teachers who cannot make it during 9th period. If you are interested in this session, please check your calendar and then fill out this Doodle. The session with the most interest will be chosen.
Mindful Printing-Do I have to print it? If yes, then continue! If no, think about posting it on Schoology instead! Do my students have to print it? If yes, then continue! If no, have them submit it through Schoology instead! Does it have to be in color? If yes, then continue! If no, think about printing it through the copier. We are really noticing a lot of color printing happening for black and white documents. Maybe print a few pages in color and the rest in black and white!
1. Copier-When possible, print to the Mac_Workroom_Library copier! You can choose all of the normal copier settings right from your computer! Want staples? Click the 'Preview' dropdown and choose 'Finishing.' Want double sided? Click the checkbox next to your number of copies. Want several pages on one page (printing a presentation)? Click the 'Preview' dropdown, choose 'Layout,' then choose how many pages per sheet. With these options, you don't even need to print a 'Master,' just print straight from your computer! 2. Print a Range-Printing a range instead of all of the pages, will help minimize how much we are printing. For example, if you buy something off of TeachersPayTeachers, they usually have a cover page and a closing page that aren't needed, so skip them! 3. Paused Printing-If the printer gets jammed or there is a big job in front of yours or yours just 'disappears,' please remember to cancel your job before printing somewhere else. If the printer icon is still in your dock, you can click on it to open the printer queue. If not, go to the black apple in the top left-hand corner, click 'Printers & Scanners,' then click on the printer you sent your job to, and click 'Open Print Queue.' From this menu, you can delete any jobs by clicking the X to the right of the name. This will help prevent printing several extra copies. 4. Printing Pictures-It's always nice to have pictures displayed around your classroom or hallways, but they use a lot of ink! Consider having them printed at Walgreens (or a similar store) instead. They are about 10-12 cents per photo, so you can usually get 100 for about $10 and they look much better printed on photo paper instead of computer paper! 5. List of Printers-You should have access to the following MAC printers:
Keyboard Tip: Command + P prints the page you are on! 1. Schoology Document Viewer-At the end of the year, Schoology snuck in an update to their document viewer. This new viewer makes the web browser version better to look at and use. There are a few new helpful tools, so I encourage you to take a look at their sneak peek video!
2. Right Click-One of the new features in the Schoology Document Viewer is the use of a right click menu on your laptop. Right click is one of my personal favorites! If you use a USB mouse, then right click is the button on the right-hand side of the mouse. For a laptop, it's a little different. You can check your settings by going to the Black Apple> System Preferences> Trackpad> Point&Click> Secondary Click. By checking the box and clicking the arrow, you can change your settings. I personally like to have the bottom right-hand corner of my trackpad set as my right click. Others like to click with two fingers. You could also just hold control when you click and you will get the same menu. It all depends on what you like! 3. Schoology Submissions-You may have noticed that some of the students have a red X across their screens when looking at previous Schoology submissions. We are looking into why these iPads did not update automatically, but in the meantime, the students can delete Schoology (it's web-based so all of their info is safe!) and then reinstall it from Self Service. 1. WiFi Connection-Tired of your laptop connecting to the macstu WiFi network instead of the faculty? Reorder your WiFi so you're always on the right one! Here is a video to lead you through these steps.
Steps: 1. Click the WiFi symbol 2. Click 'Open Network Preferences' 3. Click 'Advanced' 4. Click & Drag to reorder WiFi networks **Most important/used should be on top (put d23faculty FIRST). 5. Delete old WiFi networks with the minus button (please do not delete any D23 networks) 6. Click 'OK' 7. Click 'Apply' 2. Extended Desktop-When showing movies or videos in class (or projecting anything), you can set up your laptop to have 2 desktop screens. This allows you to project to the class while working on your own things at the same time. Follow this tutorial to turn on this feature! 3. Chrome in Labs-When using the desktop computers, make sure that the students are using GoogleChrome, especially when websites require Adobe Flash Player. If you run into any issues with a computer and a website, please email me the website, what happened, and the computer numbers so I can help! |
