1. Mojave & iPad OS 13 Features-With the updates to your laptops and iPads come new features! Here is a quick presentation that I made to highlight some of my favorites. A reminder that students will be able to update their iPads on Friday and should do so at home. 2. Grading Periods in Schoology-With the changes before the break please make sure that you are choosing Trimester 2 and not Quarter 2 (if you have a trimester class) when creating assignments and assessments. I am working with Schoology to see if we can make the correct quarter or trimester the default terms. I’ll keep you posted! 3. Sharing Google Slides in Present Mode-You may have noticed that one of the ways the 12 Days of Visible Learning was shared was in the presentation mode. This mode is a great way to share interactive slides with your class because it encourages clicking on links to navigate around instead of clicking through the thumbnails on the side. To get the correct share link, make sure that you have updated the share settings to match your activity. Then delete the end of the URL, starting at "Edit." Once you have deleted the end of the URL, add "present."

1. Bulk Edit-With our crazy weather changing our plans this week, I wanted to remind you of the 'Shift Due Dates' feature that lives in the Bulk Edit section of Schoology. This feature allows you to see all of your assignments in one place and gives you the options to change due dates where needed. This may be helpful as your plans have likely changed! 2. Snoozing in Gmail-Gmail allows you to 'Snooze' your emails. This is perfect for setting your own reminders for special schedules, tasks, etc. You can choose a date and time for that email to reappear at the top of your inbox. While we all love Chris' reminders, this may be a great way to do it on your own and give Chris a break! 3. Google Slides Grid View-Alice Keeler (the Google Guru) recently posted about using Grid View in Google Slides to see the whole class working in one space. Her post is full of wonderful ideas and would fit perfectly with the Google Apps Assignment feature in Schoology. Her specific example is using the Frayer Model with vocabulary words, which ties in wonderfully with our discussions on writing across the disciplines and how we can best help our EL students.
1. Closed Captions in Google Slides-Google just announced their release of automatic closed captions for Google Slides. This tool can be used for both recordings and for live presentations to our students. Although it's in the early stages, I can see this being an extremely helpful tool for our students. If you're interested in how this tool was made and further information, take a look here! The feature is set to be released sometime next week. 2. Schoology Calendar-As part of their September updates, Schoology released a new look for their iOS app calendar. The differences are subtle but noticeable! 3. Math Emojis-Last week's Tech Tip Tuesday included an emoji tool that best fit into a Language Arts or English class, but this week's features an emoji tool that is geared specifically for Math! Solvemoji would be great for bellringers, reasoning practice, or as a problem of the week! Thank you to Amy Banas for the suggestion!
1. Present on External Display-You can control a Google Slides presentation on your computer from your iPad. All you have to do is connect your computer to the projector, connect your iPad with Reflector, and open up your Google Slides. When you hit the present icon it will ask if you'd like to present to an external display. This will set up a presenter mode on your iPad and expand your presentation into full screen on your laptop. You can then walk around the room and switch slides on your iPad. 2. Pen Tool-While presenting your Google Slides, you can use the new pen tool to mark your slides for the group. This could be especially useful for annotations, DOLs, and math lessons. If you include an empty white slide, then voila, you have a digital whiteboard. You do need to update your Slides app in order for this feature to appear. 3. Q & A Tool-If you turn on the Q & A tool, then students can submit questions throughout your lesson. Students can use this to ask clarifying questions or as a way to check-in with their thinking throughout the lesson. Combine all three of these tools and you have a pretty engaging lesson! Add in any of the record features from Reflector Teacher/QuickTime while you're teaching and you now have a helpful resource or flipped lesson done.
Happy Last Tech Tip Tuesday of 2017! Enjoy! 1. Schoology Assessment-I enabled the new "Assessments" option in Schoology because I would like to start learning about the new features. You can still use the quiz/test feature or you can explore if you are interested. Training will be coming in the future, but I wanted you to be aware that something new will be listed under the 'Materials' tab in Schoology. 2. Google Slides Insert Image-You can fit an image to a shape in Google Slides, for an added bit of flair! 3. Insert Image from Web in Google-You can search for and add an image from the web without ever leaving your Google Doc/Slides/etc. This feature is available on both a computer and the iPad. For a computer: For an iPad:
P.S. Don't forget about our Tic-Mac-Toe Study Island Challenge! It will help prepare us for our Jan. 22nd Institute Day and our next round of meetings with Daryl from Study Island. |
